A few of you know I am the founder of the first Charter Public School in NC. I wanted to let you know the school has added high school and also changed the name to Durham Charter School. My school opened in 1997 with K-3rd grade... and now it's 28 years serving children K-12! They also built a new school building which houses grades K-12. We moved to North Carolina in 1994. Shortly after taking an intelligence test in 1996 I began working to help Republicans work on getting School Choice in NC. We lobbied the legislature for 2 years to get school vouchers. Back then, NC was mainly a Democrat state and when the Republican candidate for State Superintendent nearly won the election when he received 48.4% of the vote to the Democrat 48.8%, the congressmen could see the writing on the wall and decided to see if appeasing the voters would work. They decided to pass the Charter Public School bill into law instead.
After the Charter school law was passed I immediately began working to get a school opened. My school opened in July 1997 and was named Healthy Start Academy.
