Lisa E. shared a pumpkin wall hanging she created on one of the facebook groups I am on and I was inspired to make one like it only smaller. Here is a tutorial on how to make a 7"x22" wallhanging! Find a FREE pdf download at the end of this tutorial.
Material list:
5 orange fat quarters
1/2 yard of white background
brown scraps for the stems
green scraps for the leaves
Directions:
- Cut 1-1/2" strips from each of the orange fat quarters. Sew them together lengthwise using 1/4" seams. Press the seams open. Cut the strip set into one 7-1/2" piece, one 5-1/2" piece and one 3-1/2" inch piece.
- Cut four 1-1/2" WOF strips from the white background fabric. From one of the strips cut a 14" piece and remove 1/2" lengthwise from the strip. Then sub-cut the remaining 1" strip into twelve 1" squares.
- Place one of the white 1" on the corner of one orange strip set. Sew on the diagonal. Trim the extra away, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Open the corner piece out and press. Repeat this step for all remaining corners on each orange strip set.
- Grab one of your white background 1-1/2" strips and sub cut three 5-1/2" pieces. Sew these pieces to the bottom of each of your orange strip sets. Press.
- For your 5 inch pumpkin, cut two 6-1/2" pieces from your white background strips. Stitch these to each side of your pumpkin strip set. Press the seam towards the pumpkin. For the 3 inch pumpkin, sub cut two 4-1/2" strips and for your 7 inch pumpkin sub cut two 8-1/2" strips. Sew these to your pumpkin strip sets. Press.
- Sub cut six 3-1/2" strips from your white background. From your brown scraps, cut three 1-1/2" squares for the stems of your pumpkins. Stitch one 3-1/4" inch piece to a brown square. Add a second 3-1/4" strip to the other side of the brown square, making a strip set that is 1-1/2" x 7-1/2" wide. Repeat, making three 7-1/2" wide strip sets. Stitch one to the top of each pumpkin and press the seam.
- Cut one 7-1/2" strip from your background fabric and add it to the top of the 3 inch pumpkin. Sew the 5 inch pumpkin to the bottom of the 3 inch pumpkin and sew the 7 inch pumpkin to the bottom of the 5 inch pumpkin!
- I use a product called Stable Stuff to print shapes for applique on my printer. You will find a print out of the leaves I used attached to the pdf download. Google Sharon Schamber's youtube video instructions for gluing applique pieces. Her method is the one I use to make applique shapes. Or you may use your favorite way to make applique pieces!
Use the print out I included to cut your leaves out of your green scraps. Applique the leaves in random places, 3 leaves for each pumpkin. - Cut a backing piece from your white background fabric to fit the back of your wall hanging, and cut a piece of batting to fit as well. Sandwich your wall hanging and quilt it the way you want to quilt it. Pick one of your orange fat quarters leftovers to create 2-1/2" strips for your binding. Add the binding and hand stitch a hanging sleeve to the top of the backing and you've got a perfect addition to your home for autumn!
