Casserole Carrier

My husband and I are joining a new church called Shady Grove Church in Raleigh, NC.  Our Sunday School class features breakfast early on before the teaching begins.  Each of us volunteer one Sunday to provide breakfast, which is usually donuts, a warm casserole or perhaps chicken nuggets from Chik-fil-A.

I want to start bringing something baked from home so I searched online for a pattern and found one from Missouri Star Quilt Company that would work great!  I put a link to their video at the bottom of this post. Note: MSQC has a pattern for sale to make this carrier with 2 pot holders for purchase. I chose not to use the pattern, the video shows how to make the carrier and the pot holders I made on my own.

To make the carrier you need 1 charm pack and some yardage for the lining and binding.  I used a charm pack called Aloha Sunset by Artisan Batiks from Robert Kaufman. The yardage came from this line as well.  I used 2 layers of Quilters Dream Request batting and 1 layer of Insul-Bright batting for the innards of the carrier.  And I put all the layers on my longarm to quilt them together.

My binding will be the green batik and the lining is the orange one.

And here's the finished casserole carrier!  Sewing so many thick layers was a bit too much for my fancy shmancy sewing machine.  There are 2 layers of batting, 1 layer of Insul-Bright, 2 layers of fabric and 4 layers total of binding.  WHEW!  I ended up assembling and finishing the carrier using my 1951 Centennial Singer Featherweight.  It breezed through the thicknesses!

I used some of the leftover charm squares and batting to make
potholders to go along with the carrier.

Mini Dresden Spool Pin Doily

I made this doily for my Singer Featherweight.  I used a free pattern from The Featherweight Shop website.  It's a $10 pattern but if you sign up for their newsletter they will send an email with a link so you can download it for free.

The pattern is well written and it was fairly easy to make.  The pieces are tiny though.  Of course I used my Featherweight to make it!

I also made a pad to protect the bed from being damaged by the face plate screw.

I gave my machine a tune up as well.  It has been lubed, oiled, cleaned and waxed.  I bought a new power cord for it as well as a new oil drip pad and new LED bulb.  I highly recommend the Featherweight Shop for anything you might need for your Featherweight.  Their service is excellent and the website is a wealth of information.

Found a Featherweight!

You never know what you'll find at a quilt guild meeting.  Last night was the Durham Orange Quilters Guild meeting and one of the members was selling a Centennial Featherweight!  It wasn't used very much from the looks of it, it's in excellent condition and all the gilding is completely intact.  Here's a photo of the Centennial badge.

The case is in near mint condition and it had 2 keys with it!  The power cord has quite a few cracks in it and I will need to do a little work on it to replace the power cord.  It's a repair  I'll do myself.  Another plus:  all the accessories came with it, including one rare item, a Singer needle threader/seam ripper.

Featherweight sewing machines are highly sought after by quilters because they have a beautiful straight stitch.  The machines are fairly easy to come by if you look online.  I snapped this one up because it was in such fine condition and the price was lower than what these go for in this condition.

Singer 201-2 sewing machine

I found a Singer 201-2 on facebook marketplace the other day and couldn't pass it up.  It is a machine that has had very little use in it's lifetime.  The machine is locked up though so I'm tearing it down to find out what the problem is.  The whole machine is so dry, no oil anywhere on it.

Update:  The machine is sewing a beautiful stitch now!  I called an expert sewing machine repairman and he came by my home and got the machine running again!  I tore the machine down to where I was comfortable putting it back together but the machine still wouldn't turn but my guy did the tougher part and I'm so glad he came!

Ode to Sewing Machines #29

Many of you follow my "Ode to the Sewing Machine" posts.  We've all seen the ads on craigslist, ebay and elsewhere.  The clueless sellers give those of us who sew a belly laugh, or two!

No one in their right minds would continue reading, but who says quilters are in their right minds, so here's installment #29...

Throttle?  There's a sewing machine in there somewhere.

He dropped this one $50 and it still hasn't sold?
